Choose Fonts That Are Appropriate
Choosing fonts might seem overwhelming. There’s a wide selection of typefaces on our computer, as well as some available for free use.
It’s easy to get lost and try to be as creative as possible, but that’s not what’s important. The font you choose should be appropriate for the occasion.
For instance, going to the gala requires a formal gown and suit. Going to a business meeting requires business attire. How you choose your clothes is the same as how you choose fonts.
So, how to choose a font that’s appropriate for your project?
At the least, it should be readable. For things like a traffic signage, each letter should be distinct and easily readable from afar. In this instance, you wouldn’t use a cursive or frilly font.
If your project involves the web, remember to keep the font readable by the internet, too. Using web fonts should present no problem, as you’ll be sure that the web pages will display the font you choose.
However, the web page might display a different font on a different computer if the web doesn’t use such font. To be safe, use common system fonts that are also available on your computer by default. This might include Arial, Garamond, or Georgia.
Not sure if your computer has these? The iMac and Windows computers have different fonts but they do feature similar styles. You only need to know what the equivalent fonts are per system.
The font should also have the characters you need. Some typefaces don’t have lowercase letters, numbers, weights, and italics. You’ll need these for magazines or blog posts, whereas they don’t matter as much in headlines.
What Mood Do You Want to Create?
You also need to take into account the mood of the project when talking about appropriateness.
Is the project a menu of a fine dining restaurant? A lot of them use cursive to create a sense of elegance, but it still has to be readable by patrons.
What about logos of establishments? Banks use typefaces that demand seriousness and respect, while a clothing brand for kids can use fun and quirky ones.
Decide what mood you want to create and limit your choices of fonts from there.
You Can Use Different Typefaces
The pairing of fonts is not anything unusual in the graphic design world. In fact, we think that a project can be boring if you only use one typeface (unless it only has one word).
The rule of thumb is to pair a neutral serif and a san serif, such as Helvetica and Times New Roman. However, you can get creative and try out different combinations to see which will work for your project.
Don’t use fonts that are too similar to each other, though. One might think you only made a mistake! Instead, use contrasting fonts in terms of style, size, and weight.
